No lawful basis for SIS to access data – MSN

The New Zealand Security Intelligence Service has accepted criticism that it unlawfully accessed Customs and Immigration NZ databases to keep tabs on people entering and leaving the country.

The “unlawful acquisition” of the information took place between 1997 and 2016 on passenger movements, was accessed from a computer terminal, known as CusMod, and contained data relating to many New Zealanders.

Legislation was updated in April to make clear that the information can be legally accessed, relating to “individuals of concern” the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security, Cheryl Gwn, says.
